Wales consults on putting new 11-132kV electricity lines underground

The Welsh Government is consulting on a planning policy that would make underground installation the preferred approach for new 11-132kV electricity lines.

The proposal would end large steel lattice pylons for these devolved lines. Overhead alternatives would need to pass planning tests and use low wooden poles or similarly less intrusive infrastructure.

Responses are invited by 15th January 2027. This is a proposed policy, rather than a rule already in force, and the stated voltage range matters when assessing which projects it would cover.

The press release is dated 23rd October. The consultation page carries 22nd October publication metadata but separately gives a 23rd October launch date.
