NET ZERO NEWS · FUNDING BRIEFING

Hounslow Council has opened a new round of its Community Energy Fund, offering a route for local groups to improve the energy performance of buildings used by their communities. The announcement was published on 19th October 2026.

Current status: Applications are open. Round 5 has £150,000 available, with individual grants of up to £40,000. The closing date is Friday 22nd January 2027; awards and project delivery are still to follow.

Who and what can be supported?

The council’s guidance invites community groups based and working in the London Borough of Hounslow to apply, including groups new to energy projects. Previous grant recipients may seek support for additional decarbonisation works. Applicants should check the full eligibility and assessment requirements before developing a bid.

Examples in the guidance include insulation and glazing improvements, solar panels on community buildings, and heat pumps in buildings that are already energy efficient. These are possible project types, rather than a commitment to fund every proposal.

A local route from development to decarbonisation

The council says the fund is primarily financed through developers’ carbon offset contributions where on-site carbon reduction targets cannot be met. The money is reserved for carbon-saving projects within the borough.

Its new announcement highlights earlier projects involving lighting, thermal improvements and rooftop solar. Those examples demonstrate the range of past activity; they are not awards from this newly opened round.

Why this matters

For community asset teams, a useful first step is to connect a building’s energy needs with the services it supports. An application can then explain the proposed improvement, how its benefits will be measured and who will take responsibility for delivery. Energy savings should be supported by a proportionate assessment, rather than assumed from the choice of technology.

For public-sector project leaders elsewhere, the scheme offers a practical example of a council linking a local funding mechanism with community-led building improvements. The published £150,000 is the available grant budget, not a claim about carbon savings already achieved.

Next steps

Hounslow organisations can review the council’s guidance, confirm eligibility and prepare proposals before 22nd January 2027. Check the official pages for any updates to requirements or timings.
