Three Rivers District Council has raised its solar and battery grant ceiling from £3,000 to £6,500 and widened access to community buildings, alongside local businesses.

What has changed

The refreshed scheme part-funds solar panels, battery storage or both at eligible premises in the district. Owners of non-residential buildings providing community activities, services or space can now apply.

This is an application opportunity, rather than an announcement of completed installations or grants already awarded.

Current status and key conditions

  • Applications are assessed on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to eligibility, viability and available funding.

  • The detailed scheme guidance gives a deadline of 31st March 2028, with earlier closure if funding is allocated.

  • Applicants must fund at least 50% of installation costs and have the resources to cash-flow the project.

  • Payment is retrospective: successful applicants complete and pay for the project before claiming their award.

  • Two installer quotations and any required landlord permission must accompany the application.

Why this matters

For community building operators, the practical issue is turning an installation proposal into an affordable, deliverable project. The higher ceiling may help bridge that gap, but the contribution requirement and retrospective payment mean cash flow needs attention from the outset.

For councils considering similar programmes, this illustrates a route for linking local grant support with community-building energy improvements. Actual generation, bill savings and emissions reductions will depend on each installation; no scheme-wide outcome is claimed here.

Next steps

Prospective applicants should check the council’s full eligibility criteria and terms, confirm remaining funding and prepare quotations and permissions before committing to works.
