Aelwyd Housing Association has completed a solar roof at Llwyn Derw in Tonypandy, adding renewable electricity generation to a communal building serving 13 residents.

The association says the roof was installed over the summer. Part of the cost was supported by the Welsh Government’s Optimised Retrofit Grant.

Aelwyd expects the installation to help lower residents’ energy costs and improve the homes’ energy rating. Its announcement does not give a generation capacity, a grant amount or measured bill savings.

Why this matters

The completed scheme offers a small-scale example of renewable energy investment in Welsh social housing. For housing providers, it shows how roof work and retrofit support can be combined; performance data would be needed to quantify the contribution to energy use, bills and emissions.
