Sea Link consent advances electricity connection between Suffolk and Kent

Sea Link has received development consent, advancing plans for an electricity transmission connection between Suffolk and Kent. The Planning Inspectorate announced the decision on 30th October 2026.

Current position

The decision includes a new converter station near the proposed Friston substation, connected by underground cables. It concerns electricity transmission infrastructure, rather than a new generating station.

The consent is a planning milestone. Detailed construction arrangements and implementation remain separate from this decision; the connection is not yet operational.

Why this matters

For public estates and clean-energy developers, the milestone illustrates the infrastructure needed to move electricity between regions. Consent does not mean the link is operational, nor establish a guaranteed saving on individual bills.
