Oxford tops out 51 energy-efficient affordable homes

Oxford’s Northfield Gate development has reached topping out, with two four-storey apartment blocks now at their full height.

The project will provide 27 council homes for social rent and 24 shared-ownership homes on the former Northfield Hostel site in Littlemore. Oxford City Council, its housing company OX Place and contractor Equans marked the construction milestone on 19th October.

The council’s 23rd October update says the homes will combine strong insulation, airtight construction and solar panels. It does not publish measured energy use or a verified carbon-saving figure for the development.

Roofing and other construction work continue, with completion expected in spring 2027. These are homes under construction, rather than completed properties ready for occupation.

For housing teams, the scheme brings affordable supply and energy performance into the same delivery programme. The next milestones are practical completion and evidence of performance once residents move in.
