Luton has installed its first EV chargepoints specifically supporting council housing residents. The new fast chargers serve five council-owned housing locations, including areas where residents lack private driveways.

Project status: Installed and available

What changed

The council worked with Believ, which fully funded the installations and is responsible for operation and maintenance. Chargers are available at Vadis Close, The Moakes, The Crossways, The Green and Bailey Street. They are open to the public, with local parking restrictions applying at several locations. Further chargepoints are planned, but this announcement concerns the installations already available.

Key project takeaways

  • Housing and highways teams can jointly identify charging gaps affecting residents without off-street parking.

  • Compare operator-funded models using access, tariffs, maintenance responsibilities and parking arrangements.

Why this matters

Councils can consider operator-funded charging to improve access for residents without private driveways. Tariffs, parking restrictions, maintenance and long-term access arrangements are important factors when comparing delivery models.
