Almost 1,200 solar panels are being installed at Guildford Spectrum. The council expects the array to produce around 500,000 kWh annually, equivalent to roughly 12% of the leisure centre’s electricity needs.

Project status: Installation starting

What changed

Work begins in the week of 12 October and covers approximately 2,400 square metres of roof. Guildford Borough Council is delivering the investment with Freedom Leisure, the centre’s operator. The project is forecast to reduce annual emissions by around 72 tonnes CO₂e. Generation and emissions figures are projections at the start of installation; they should be tested against operating data after commissioning.

Key project takeaways

  • Large leisure roofs can support generation aligned with substantial on-site electricity demand.

  • Agree how the asset owner and operator will monitor, maintain and account for the installation.

Why this matters

Leisure centres with substantial daytime electricity demand can assess how on-site solar would match their operating profile. Once commissioned, actual generation and self-consumption should be compared with business-case assumptions.
