New EPC statistics show efficiency gap between new and existing homes

New housing energy-performance statistics highlight the difference between new and existing dwellings with valid certificates in England and Wales.

The release, published on 29th October 2026, reports a median score of 84, equivalent to EPC B, for new dwellings in both nations. Existing dwellings scored 68 in England and 67 in Wales, both within EPC D.

The analysis uses certificates from April 2016 to March 2026 and retains the latest valid record for each dwelling. It does not represent every home, track subsequent improvements or measure actual household energy bills.

Councils and housing organisations can use the local breakdowns to inform retrofit research alongside stock surveys. They should account for incomplete coverage and differences from earlier ONS methods when comparing results.
